Ukraine ranked third in arms imports
According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) report on global arms transfers, the war between Russia and Ukraine led to a significant flow of US and European military aid to Kiev.
This has made Ukraine the third largest arms importer in the world by 2022.
THE SITUATION OF THE WAR CHANGED
Ukraine gained its independence in 1991 during the collapse of the Soviet Union and imported many major weapons by the end of 2021. However, on February 24, 2022, Russia’s war against Ukraine significantly changed this situation.
Pieter Wezeman, Senior Research Fellow at SIPRI’s Arms Transfers Programme, said that despite the decline in global arms transfers last year, arms imports to Europe have risen sharply due to tensions between Russia and most of the countries. the other European countries.
Wezeman noted that after the Russian invasion of the Ukraine, European countries wanted to import more weapons and faster.
ARMS EXPORTS FROM RUSSIA WILL BE CLOSED MORE
SIPRI announced that arms exports have been dominated by the US and Russia for a long time, and these two countries have been the two largest arms exporters for the past three decades.
The gap between the US and Russia widened significantly, while the gap between Russia and France, the third largest arms supplier, narrowed.
According to SIPRI, low demands from other countries as a result of Russia’s “invasion of Ukraine” prioritizing arms supplies to its own military and imposed trade sanctions will further limit Moscow’s arms exports.
SIPRI data shows that US arms exports increased by 14% between 2013-2017 and 2018-2022, with Washington accounting for 40% of global arms exports in 2018-2022.
While Russia’s arms exports fell by 31 percent between these two periods, its share of world arms exports fell from 22 to 16 percent. France’s share increased from 7.1 percent to 11 percent. (AA)
