HDP call to Erdogan from the left of the world
The Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), which was facing a case of closure and a possible political ban against its members before the elections, received international support.
Last week, the Constitutional Court decided to lift the blockade on the HDP bank account, which also includes aid from the Treasury. HDP co-chair Mithat Sancar, on the other hand, stated that the closure case against the party should not be discussed during the electoral process and announced that they would again request to leave the decision on the case until after the elections.
As the debate unfolded, more than 50 political leaders supported the petition organized by Progressive International, which was established to bring together progressive and left-wing organizations from around the world.
Among the names who signed the campaign, which criticized the Erdogan government’s pressure on the HDP, is Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the left-wing Indomitable France movement, which had a great rise in the last elections in France, the former leader of the Party of the British Workers’ Party Jeremy Corbyn and the co-chair of the German Left Party Janine Wissler.
The statement included the comment that banning the HDP just before the elections would harm democracy in Turkey. The signatories said: “It is time for the legal attacks against the HDP to end immediately and completely.”
