Authorities in Eastern European Moldova have arrested members of a pro-Russian network suspected of destabilizing the country. After house searches, 25 men were questioned and seven arrested, police said.
The move against the Moscow-orchestrated movement came just before a pro-Russian demonstration in the Moldovan capital Chisinau. According to the media of the former Soviet republic, a few hours before the demonstration there had also been four bomb attacks in Chisinau. By the way, the international airport has been evacuated. The Russian secret services also played a role in this, the authorities think.
The Moldovan party of pro-Russian fugitive and influential businessman Ilan Shor has staged protests against the pro-European government in recent weeks. He is suspected of having given money to the participants. Washington also accuses Russia of trying to destabilize Moldova, between Ukraine and Romania, with the aim of installing a pro-Russian government.
