North Korea is considering “meaningful and practical” measures to deter potential provocations by the United States and South Korea. Especially in view of the joint military exercises the countries will conduct in the next two weeks. Bloomberg reports.
For example, Pyongyang would like to appear ‘more effective and powerful’ to the West in terms of the weapons available. Especially since US and South Korean provocations towards North Korea are beginning to reach a “borderline”, according to a North Korean representative.
The decision was made during a meeting of the Central Military Commission of the North Korean Workers’ Party, which was also attended by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
Shield of freedom
The United States and South Korea will begin tomorrow with a two-week military exercise called Freedom Shield, which will last until March 23. With this, the countries want to strengthen their defenses against the North Korean nuclear threat. It would be the largest and most intense military exercises in recent years.
North Korea, which sees such exercises as a harbinger of an invasion and thus nuclear war, has pledged to respond in an “unprecedented way”. For example, they called on the United States and South Korea to immediately stop “enemy military actions” and North Korea accused the United States of deliberately increasing tension on the Korean peninsula.
