Former US Vice President Mike Pence lashed out at his former ally Donald Trump on Saturday night. Speaking at an annual dinner with reporters, Pence said history would “hold Trump accountable” for what happened during the storming of the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
“President Trump was wrong,” Pence said in a speech about that day. Trump then addressed a crowd of angry followers and wanted Pence as Senate president to end Joe Biden’s election victory. “I had no right to reverse the election results. His thoughtless words put my family and everyone on the Capitol in danger that day.”
Trump has already announced his presidential candidacy, but there are rumors in Washington that Pence will also run. You distance yourself from Trump with statements like this. Because the dinner Pence spoke at on Saturday is usually a light-hearted, entertaining event, he began his speech with a quip: “I will wholeheartedly and unreservedly support the Republican candidate … if it’s me.”
