German unions warn of strikes at airports Related articles

German trade union Verdi has called on security guards at airports in Berlin, Hamburg, Hanover and Bremen to go on strike on Monday. Security guards would not be paid enough for the work, which often takes place at irregular hours. According to Verdi, the compensation for this irregularity has not been increased since 2006.

The strike was to begin on Sunday evening or early Monday morning at the various airports. Verdi expects this to lead to long queues of departing travellers. 200 flights are canceled at Berlin airport.

Unions and airport companies in Germany have long disagreed on wages. There was another strike by baggage handlers at Munich airport on Friday.

Prolonged conflict

The strike was to begin on Sunday evening or early Monday morning at the various airports. Verdi expects this to lead to long queues of departing travellers. The airports of Berlin and Hamburg have agreed to cancel all departing flights on Monday. In Berlin 27,000 travelers are affected, in Hamburg more than 30,000 air passengers.
