The law that sparked the uprising in Georgia is withdrawn
The law on “transparency of foreign influence” was repealed, causing great controversy and protests in Georgia.
Protesting the passing of the law on foreign countries’ intelligence activities, protesters tried to surround the parliament building in the capital Tbilisi last night, with police dispersing the crowd with tear gas and water cannons. Protesters demanding the annulment of the law broke windows of parliament and damaged police cars.
More than 70 protesters were claimed to have been detained and 50 police officers injured during the two-day demonstrations.
President Salome Zurabishvili also reacted to the “transparency of foreign influence” law, stating that the law could have been prepared “at the instruction of Russia.”
After the backlash, Georgia’s ruling Imagination party announced that it had unconditionally withdrawn the law to end the conflict in society.
