Debate on the withdrawal of troops from Syria in the US Congress

The lower house of the US Congress, the House of Representatives, voted on a bill introduced by Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz calling on President Joe Biden to withdraw all US troops from Syria.

The bill was defeated with 321 “no” votes to 103 “yes” votes. 56 House Democrats and 47 Republicans supported the bill.

Gaetz stated that Americans may wonder how Syria has become the arena of great power competition, pointing to the complex equation that has occurred in Syria.

Recalling the support given by the Gulf countries to the opposition in the events that began when the Syrian regime opened fire on its own people, Gaetz noted that Iran not only supported Syria, but also brought Hezbollah into the field and occupied Syria. . Gaetz said that Russia also intervened and further complicated the picture by descending into the eastern Mediterranean.

EMPHASIS ON TURKEY AND THE PKK

Referring to the PKK/YPG forces in Syria, Gaetz said: “In addition to all this, the Kurds have emerged who have declared war on Syria, and what further complicates the situation is that the Kurds are also in conflict with our ally of NATO, Turkey. .”

Stating that the United States was involved in the “disaster” in Syria in 2015 and that Americans lost their lives there, Gaetz also emphasized that billions of dollars were spent in this context. Gaetz also stated that Turkey is fighting ISIS in Syria and that he does not believe there are 900 US troops between the presence and absence of the ISIS terrorist organization in an environment where the Syrian regime and Russia can put pressure on the terrorist organization.

Gaetz, who invited lawmakers to read the report on the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) Chief Inspectorate’s determined support operation to fight ISIS, argued that according to this, ISIS no longer poses a threat to USA

Republican MP Marjorie Taylor Greene, who supported the bill, also championed the view that the US Department of Defense should not wage war in foreign countries at the expense of US taxpayers. Greene said the Department of Defense should be fighting Mexican cartels that smuggle drugs into the country, not Syria.

Greene, who claimed that no American in the constituency had told him, “We must go to war in Syria,” drew attention to the fact that many American soldiers lost their lives in foreign lands. (AA)
