The French Senate approved raising the retirement age from 62 to 64. The proposal received 201 votes in favor and 115 against. There is a lot of resistance to the law, in recent months the French have taken to the streets en masse to protest against the plans.

The retirement age is the hottest issue in the ferment for reforms of the French pension system. According to the government, this has become unsustainable, in part because there are relatively many more retirees.

Today in the Senate the other proposals for the reform of the pension system continue to be discussed. Another fiercely criticized plan is that the French will only receive a full pension after 43 years of work. The Senate must vote on the entire package of amendments by Sunday evening at the latest.

Protests

The French have taken to the streets en masse on several occasions in recent months to express their dissatisfaction with the plans. There have also been major strikes in education and public transport, among other things.
