US President Joe Biden wants to increase the US defense budget to an all-time high. With a spending plan of 835 billion dollars, more than 790 billion euros, it will be one of the highest defense budgets ever. “Billions are flying over the table,” this is how US correspondent Jan Postma describes it.
For example, Biden wants to spend the money on expanding reserves ($170 billion), developing new weapons ($145 billion), and developing the F-35 ($13.5 billion). “Factories here are running at full capacity for Ukraine, but US supplies have gone through.”
New weapons development includes medium- and long-range weapons that could reach China. “It is a signal for China and Russia. To Putin for showing that the US is still behind the cause of Ukraine and to China because that country is eyeing Taiwan.’
Approval question marks
For Biden, however, it will be exciting if his US defense budget plan is adopted in the House of Representatives, where his party does not have a majority. “We don’t really know what the reports are at the moment. There is, however, a large majority of Republicans who want to continue unconditionally supporting Ukraine. But at the same time there is a group who say that too much money is being spent and that the money should go to the Americans. However, this is a minority, but a strong minority,’ according to Postma.
