Support for the modernization of the European Union to Greece
The President of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that she had this meeting with the Greek Prime Minister, Kiriakos Mitsotakis.
Making a statement on social media, von der Leyen stated that he and Mitsotakis discussed the technical support that the EU can provide to Greece to modernize the railways and increase security.
Von der Leyen stated that experts from the EU Commission and the EU Railway Agency will go to Athens this week and that rail safety is the top priority.
Last week, 57 people, mostly young people, lost their lives when two trains collided near the northern Greek city of Larissa.
After the accident, there was criticism that Greece’s 2,500-kilometre rail network was the system most in need of modernization in the EU and that public investment in modernizing the railways had not been made for years. (AA)
