Russian President Putin has convened his Security Council. He will probably announce a new mobilization, says BNR foreign commentator Bernard Hammelburg. “I think he needs a lot more people than he initially thought.”
‘I think there are now about 150,000 active soldiers in the border area, about 150,000 soldiers are still in training. But that’s still not enough for the offensive he wants to launch,’ says Hammelburg.
General mobilization
A new mobilization has been in the air for some time. In this case it would be a general mobilization, which is fundamentally different. “A general mobilization means that a country must switch entirely to a war economy, with all men aged between 18 and 45 or 47 at the ready. This will turn an entire society upside down and also lead to growing opposition in our own country.’ Putin will therefore have to work out a clear strategy. “Russia is not very strong in this.”
“Russia is not very strong in this.”
German Chancellor Scholz’s visit to US President Biden could also be on the agenda. “A wonderful visit,” says Hammelburg. Schulz is coming for one day, brings no media and there is no closing press conference scheduled. “This is very unusual.”
tanks
The conversation between the two leaders will mainly concern the supply of weapons and money to Ukraine. “Germany is under heavy criticism because Schulz is accused of having one foot on the accelerator and the other on the brake,” says Hammelburg. This can be seen, for example, in the deliveries of tanks to Ukraine. “Scholz only wanted to deliver Leopard 2 tanks, if the Americans would also send Abram tanks.” Biden agreed, but this also led to tensions between the two countries. “I think they want to turn this into a common policy between the leader of NATO and the largest economy in Europe.”
Ostpolitik
Germany has historically come a long way, says Hammelburg. ‘Schulz is a Social Democrat and comes from Willy Brandt’s famous Ostpolitik tradition. Germany has long felt like a connecting factor between East and West, its ideology has not completely disappeared.’
