The Taliban ask for an embassy in Europe

The deputy foreign minister of the Taliban interim government in Afghanistan, Emirhan Muttaki, called on European Union (EU) countries to reopen their embassies in Afghanistan. Muttaki met with the EU Special Representative for Afghanistan, Tomas Niklasson, and his delegation in Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan.

Hafez Ziya Ahmed, deputy spokesman for the Taliban interim government’s Foreign Ministry, made a statement on the content of the meeting on his personal Twitter account. Ahmed said Muttaki said necessary steps should be taken to improve diplomatic relations between Afghanistan and EU countries and EU countries should be encouraged to reopen their embassies in Kabul.

Ahmed also noted that Muttaki thanked the EU for the humanitarian aid provided to Afghanistan.

According to the information provided by the Taliban official, EU Special Representative Niklasson stated that with the coming to power of the Taliban, security in Afghanistan was ensured and serious measures were taken in the fight against corruption. Niklasson also affirmed that they will continue with the humanitarian aid to Afghanistan.

EU countries closed their embassies there on August 15, 2021, when the Taliban came into the administration of Afghanistan. (AA)
