The new law in Spain unleashes the crisis
The legal reform, which is known by public opinion with the motto “only yes is yes”, and which considers sexual relations without verbal and express consent as rape, means that prisoners convicted of this crime are released or receive a reduced sentence due to some technical deficiencies.
In the statement made by the General Council of the Judiciary of Spain, it is reported that 74 prisoners have been released so far due to the deficiency of the law, while 721 prisoners have received reduced sentences.
BASIC REASON EXPLAINED
Experts point out that the law does not distinguish between sexual harassment and assault, that the crime is handled in a broad spectrum, and that it contradicts the article of the Constitution regarding the sanctioning provisions that are in favor of personal rights or that are not restrictive, as the main reason for reduced sentences.
Although the Socialist Workers Party (PSOE), the majority partner of the coalition government, began working to remedy the aforementioned deficiency two months ago, it has not been able to convince its partner, the ultra-leftist United We Can.
