The death toll rises in the train accident that rocked Greece
Greek media announced that 46 people died in the accident that occurred when a freight train and a passenger train collided in the city of Larissa.
The Greek fire department reported that the number of injured was 72, 15 people were discharged and 6 of them were in intensive care.
It was reported that there were 350 people on the passenger train traveling from Athens to Thessaloniki, with most of the passengers being students returning from the Apokries Carnival.
AN IMPOSSIBLE TRAGEDY
Greek Prime Minister Kiriakos Mitsotakis shared on his social media account: “What we are going through as a country today is very difficult. We are talking about an indescribable tragedy. Our thoughts are first and foremost with the families of the victims. My condolences to them. Our duty now is to care for the wounded and be at their side. There is one thing that I can guarantee from now on; “We will find the causes of this tragedy and do everything we can to make sure it never happens again.”
ARREST OF THE STATION MANAGER
As part of the groundbreaking investigation launched by the Greek police, the 59-year-old station chief, whose identity has not yet been revealed, was arrested.
Greek media said the station chief claimed in his statement that the accident occurred as a result of a technical malfunction. Prime Minister Mitsotakis said in his speech that the accident occurred as a result of tragic human error.
