In Nigeria’s 25-26 February presidential elections, former Lagos Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu, an All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, was elected the new president.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Tinubu received 8,794,726 votes and became the country’s new head of state. Tinubu’s biggest rival in the election, main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Atiku Abubakar came second with 6,101,533 votes, while Labor Party (LP) candidate Peter Obi, it ranked third with 6 million 984 thousand. 520 votes.

In Nigeria, which is governed by the federal system, to win the presidential election, each candidate must receive 25 percent of the vote in the capital region of Abuja and in 24 of the 36 states. Tinubu won elections in 12 states and garnered 25 percent of the vote in 18 states, providing the necessary majority in 30 states in total. The main opposition PDP also ranked first in 12 states, while the LP ranked first in 11 states and the Federal Capital region.

‘GODFATHER OF LAGOS’

Known by the nickname “Asiwaju”, which means “one who leads” in Yoruba, Tinubu is one of the most powerful and prominent politicians in the country.

Born in Lagos state and entered politics in 1992, Tinubu, 70, was exiled in 1994 due to a coup by former president General Sani Abacha. After Abacha’s death in 1998, with the new era of democracy ushered in the country, Tinubu was elected Governor of Lagos after returning to the country in 1999 and served for 8 years.

Tinubu founded the APC party with current President Mohammed Buhari in 2013, and Buhari won the 2015 presidential election with APC.

Tinubu, who served as Governor of Lagos for 8 years, was nicknamed “Godfather of Lagos” by the people of Lagos for his services. Tinubu is claimed to have played an important role in the development and redevelopment of Lagos, the commercial hub of Nigeria.

Tinubu, who during his tenure turned Lagos into an economic hub by attracting foreign investment, alleviated the traffic problem with a public transport plan that created new express bus lanes.

THE PROMISES OF TINUBU

The country, which has long been rocked by terror attacks and armed gangs, has also been struggling with economic problems in recent years.

Tinubu, who promised elections in different fields from economy to security, from social welfare to education, promised a good life and employment with reasonable wages, especially for the youth.
Tinubu wants to strengthen both the local currency and the lifestyle of the people by exporting more and importing less.
