UN representative in Syria Pedersen: Resources must be delivered quickly to the Syrian people
Pedersen, the United Nations (UN) Secretary General’s Special Representative for Syria, spoke at the Middle East session held at the UN Security Council.
Stating that he called on all parties to “depoliticize” the humanitarian aid process, Pedersen said all obstacles limiting aid to the Syrian people must be removed.
Stating that conflicts and military activities must also stop immediately, Pedersen said: “Now is not the time to get politically involved with border crossings. The resources must be quickly delivered to the Syrian people affected by the earthquakes.” saying.
Recalling that the US, UK and EU lifted some sanctions against the Syrian regime, which may be related to the earthquake, so as not to hamper relief efforts, Pedersen noted that he welcomed it.
Noting that the current situation once again reveals the importance of a political solution in Syria, Pedersen said this can become an opportunity for a political solution with “strong leadership, bold initiatives and a spirit of cooperation.” (AA)
