Several Russian domestic flights en route to St. Petersburg returned to their starting point today. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on the basis of data from the flight monitoring site Flight Radar.

At least five flights en route from the capital Moscow to St. Petersburg had returned to Moscow by 8am GMT (11am local time) after initially circling the sky, flight paths showed on Flight Radar.

It wasn’t immediately clear why, although Reuters reports that an unconfirmed media report from Russia’s online news agency Baza said an unidentified object had been seen in the sky and fighter jets had been sent to investigate.
