Chinese Ambassador to the European Union Fu Cong said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel were welcome to visit China in the first half of 2023, Reuters reported. Fu made the statements to state media Global Times.
Preparations for the China-EU summit are already underway and “very frequent preparatory visits” are likely to be undertaken soon, said Fu. The European Union and China clearly have different positions when it comes to the war in Ukraine. For example, European diplomats have allegedly criticized China for its refusal to describe the conflict as an invasion, or for the fact that China has not yet called on the Russians to withdraw from Ukrainian territory.
Irrational
Fu called Europe’s anger at China irrational, saying that China did not want Ukraine’s situation to affect China’s ties with Europe.
Earlier, China’s foreign ministry released a document outlining its position on the war, which EU ambassador to China Jorge Toledo described as “worrying”. “At no point is there any mention of an attacker, which is odd because it’s more than obvious that he is,” said Toledo. “It’s an illegal and unprovoked invasion, so that worries me.”
