Excitement for the general elections in Nigeria

The polls opened at 08:30 local time on instructions from the Independent National Electoral Commission, closed at 14:30 and counting began.

In the election, in addition to the new head of state, 108 members of the Senate and 360 members of the House of Representatives were voted.

In the country, where approximately 93 million voters are registered, votes were cast in more than 176,000 ballot boxes installed in 36 states, as well as in the capital, Abuja.

Election results are expected within 24 hours. Nigeria’s current president, Mohammed Buhari, was unable to run again as he served out his two-term term.

Prominent among the 18 candidates in the presidential election are the ruling All Progressives Congress candidate, former Lagos Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the leader of the main opposition People’s Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, and Labor Party candidate Peter Obi.

According to the constitution, the president, who is elected for 4 years, can serve for a maximum of 2 terms. (AA)
