Japan Structural Engineer Earthquake Disaster Commentary

The London-based Arab media organization Middle East Eye published a comprehensive report on the earthquake disaster that struck Turkey. The article, titled “The devastating rise and fall of the construction boom in Turkey,” said: “Experts, many lives would have been saved if the regulation was implemented, from inappropriate buildings to their inspection.”

A Japanese-American structural engineer, who conducted investigations in the earthquake region where more than 50,000 people lost their lives, made a statement.

“THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM IS VERY GOOD BUT…”

Miyamoto said: “Turkey has a modern building code, there is no need to change it. The education system is also fantastic. Some of the best earthquake engineers in the world are from Turkey. So that’s not the point. It’s about the process,” he said.

While it was indicated in the news that the reaction to President Erdoğan increased due to the slowness of aid to the region, Miyamoto said: “It is sad that 100 contractors are detained, such things always happen after disasters. Someone has to be blamed. You think it’s easy, but it’s not. You have to change the whole system,” he said.
