Grocery and fruit crisis in UK market chains
As Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Aldi, one of the country’s leading supermarket chains, imposed limits on produce per customer due to problems in their supply chains, it was noted that many supermarket shelves remained empty.
In the statements of the British government and market chains, it was stated that the crisis of fruit and vegetable products was caused by bad weather conditions in European countries.
Rising electricity prices also contributed to rising production costs in greenhouses in the Netherlands in the fruit and vegetable supply crisis.
Asda announced that only 3 heads of lettuce, broccoli and cauliflower can be purchased per customer, while Morrisons has a limit of 2 cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce and peppers per customer.
In the statement issued by the British Retail Consortium (BCR), it was indicated that there were supply problems in some fruits and vegetables that the country mainly imports, especially tomatoes.
In the statement, it was reported that the UK met 95 percent of its tomato needs and 90 percent of its lettuce needs in the winter months of Spain and South Africa. (AA)
