The body of the legendary leader is reburied 36 years later

The body of Thomas Sankara, the legendary leader of Burkina Faso, has been buried 36 years after his death.

According to the national media report, Sankara’s body was buried at the Thomas Sankara Memorial in the capital Vagadugu with a ceremony. Members of the military and opinion leaders, especially many people, observed a moment of silence at the ceremony.

Many people were photographed in front of Sankara’s coffin, which was draped in the Burkina Faso flag.
Known as “the legendary leader of Burkina Faso”, Sankara and his close friend Blaise Compaore at the time took over the administration of Burkina Faso in 1983.

Sankara, who became president from 1983-1987, was tried to be removed from office by Compaore in 1987, dying at age 37 in the ensuing events. The bodies of Sankara and the 12 people who lost their lives with him were exhumed in 2015 to investigate the causes of death.

Compaore was sentenced to life in prison in absentia trial for the death of Sankara in April 2022. (BRITISH AUTOMOBILE CLUB)
