Netherlands prosecute Putin for war in Ukraine
In the administrative capital, The Hague, a representative court called the “World Citizens’ Court,” known as the “People’s Court,” is putting Putin on trial.
Canadian lawyer Drew White, who is the representative court prosecutor, said today at the first representative hearing: “This crime is part of the history of shame. This crime deserves punishment.” saying.
White said that although the “People’s Court” has no power, it will prosecute Putin on the grounds that he committed the crime of “attack” by declaring war on Ukraine.
Although the court’s decision is not binding, it was indicated that the evidence proving that the crime of assault was committed will be processed in the representative trial.
UKRAINE WANTS A SPECIAL COURT
Since the beginning of the war, Ukraine has demanded the establishment of a special court, where Russian perpetrators will be tried for having committed international crimes.
The European Parliament (EP) decision on January 19 urged the EU to set up a special court, as Russia’s political and military leaders committed war crimes in Ukraine and must be held accountable for these crimes.
Latvian President Egils Levits met European Parliament President Roberta Metsola in Brussels last week and after the meeting told reporters: “We must create a special court. The international community has done it before in the cases of Yugoslavia, Cambodia. Therefore, it is much more necessary to do this in the case of Russia.” he had spoken.
On the other hand, the International Criminal Court (ICC), based in The Hague, opened an investigation into crimes committed in Ukraine shortly after the start of the war, but the ICC has no jurisdiction over the “crime of aggression” in Ukraine. .
Ukraine wants a special court to be set up so that Russian soldiers and political leaders, whom it has held responsible for starting the war, can be tried for the “crime of aggression.” (AA)
