Zelensky was interviewed by the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera Sunday. In it, he responded to French President Macron’s statement that Russia must be “defeated but not crushed” and that the conflict in Ukraine must be resolved through negotiations. Zelensky reacted furiously. He sees here what is also seen in various other places in the world: we are in solidarity and we want to supply arms, but the final objective must be negotiation ».

«So the emphasis is more on negotiation than on the supply of weapons. It seems to Zelensky that Macron is pressing the accelerator with one foot and braking with the other.’ According to Hammelburg, Foreign Minister Hoekstra is right when he says that the war could last for years. ‘The question is, how does it hold on to your civilized society? How to ensure that people in the free world are willing to invest billions in that war for years, while they themselves also have problems to solve in their own society?’
Ukraine struggles in the US
Ukraine’s fatigue is beginning to make itself felt in the United States as well. In Congress, 11 Republicans have presented a motion calling for a reduction in military and financial aid to Kiev. “That speaks volumes,” Hammelburg says, “because at the same time, popular support for those huge arms deliveries is declining from 60 percent a month ago to 48 percent now.”
Hammelburg points out that any help now promised or delivered still comes from the budget the old Congress passed last year, when the majority was still a Democrat. There is now a republican majority, but no new budget and no new budget for Ukraine.
