Hungarian Parliament discusses NATO membership Finland and Sweden Related articles

The Hungarian parliament is today debating the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO. It took some time, according to Hungary correspondent Stefan Bos, because pro-Putin Prime Minister Victor Orbán delayed it. And this has caused great irritation among the Swedes and Finns, says Bos, who he thinks parliament will accept membership.

Although Hungary is a member of the EU, Viktor Orbán is known as an ally of Vladimir Putin. ‘Orbán’s hobby is obstructive, that definitely played a part. This weekend he said he wanted to strengthen ties with Russia, especially in the field of energy. (ANP/Associated Press/Darko Vojinovic)

“I think there’s a good chance they’ll agree, after all, they’re under a lot of pressure,” says Bosman. ‘There is, however, enormous irritation from Sweden and Finland that it has taken so long. The Hungarian Prime Minister says that, in his view, Sweden and Finland have not lost momentum in the accession process, but Sweden and Finland think otherwise.’

Notorious sleeper

Although Hungary is a member of the EU, Viktor Orbán is known as an ally of Vladimir Putin. ‘Orbán’s hobby is obstructive, that definitely played a part. This weekend he said he wants to strengthen ties with Russia, especially in the field of energy. He has close ties to Putin and wants to continue doing so. He is against the sanctions, but in the end he will sign the cross’.

Bos thinks Hungary’s ratification may be possible today, even though two-thirds of Hungary’s parliament is in the hands of Orbán’s party and is considered a clapping machine for the prime minister.
