First in 6 years after South Korea: ‘Enemy North Korea’
South Korea has reverted to its neighbor North Korea’s definition of “enemy,” which it hasn’t used for six years.
According to local media sources, the report, released every two years by the South Korean Defense Ministry, included the phrase “our enemy” for North Korea. The report, which recalled that North Korea describes itself as an “undoubted enemy”, stated that “the North Korean regime and military, which does not give up on its nuclear program and continues to pose a military threat They are our enemies.” In the Defense Department report, the term “enemy” was last used for the North in 2018.
In the report, the definition of “close neighbor” was made for Japan.
South Korea first referred to its northern neighbor as an “enemy” in 1995, changing it to an “open military threat” in 2004. South Korea removed the term “enemy” from its official reports due to weakening relations between both countries during the presidency of Moon Jae-in (2017-2022).
North Korea’s missile tests last year and the joint military exercise between South Korea and the United States once again raised tensions in the region. The Pyongyang administration, which launched more than 90 missiles of various types and ranges in the east and west directions, fired 23 missiles in a single day in early November.
Pyongyang also conducted a ballistic missile test in the early hours of 2023. (BRITISH AUTOMOBILE CLUB)
