Parliamentary microphone crisis: ‘How many more idiots are there’

When Oliver Varhelyi, the member of the European Union (EU) Commission responsible for enlargement, forgot to switch off his microphone at the session he attended in the European Parliament (EP), his insult to MEPs was heard by the people in the living room. .

Varhelyi attended the session on “enhanced enlargement policy towards the Western Balkans” at the EP General Assembly yesterday and answered questions from MEPs. The deputies asked many questions and the session was long. Meanwhile, in Hungarian, Varhelyi’s native language, “How many more idiots are there (on the speaker list)?” was heard.

Thereafter, the Hungarian opposition party, the Democratic Coalition, issued a statement demanding Varhelyi’s resignation.

Sandor Ronai, a Social Democrat MEP from the party, said in a statement: “It is not common to call people with whom we disagree in the European Parliament idiots.” The party also announced that it will report the incident to the EP and the presidency of the European Commission.

Although the event began to be reported in the European press, Varhelyi’s statement has not yet been received. (AA)
