Swedish Chancellor: We share Turkey’s pain
Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström said they shared Turkey’s grief over the earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş and said he had sent 37 million kroner (approximately $3.558 thousand) of aid to Turkey and Syria.
Making a statement ahead of the foreign policy session in the Swedish Parliament, Billström stressed that they stand in solidarity with the people of Turkey and Syria due to the earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş, saying: “We share the pain of the disaster in Turkey. “Sweden did not remain indifferent to this disaster and sent a search and rescue team to the region, in addition to financial assistance of 37 million kroner.”
Billström said: “We will continue to help Turkey and do our best. We will discuss economic and social assistance for Turkey and Syria at a meeting to be held in Brussels under the Presidency of the Commission of the European Union (EU).
SWEDEN’S MEMBERSHIP IN NATO
Regarding Sweden’s NATO application, Billström made the following assessments:
“The Tripartite Memorandum on NATO, signed last year in Madrid, the capital of Spain, between Finland, Sweden and Turkey continues. We abide by this agreement. Naturally, the last time I called Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, we talked about the earthquake disaster. The disaster is more important. We will talk about NATO in the future.”
In his speech in Parliament, Minister Billström affirmed that Sweden will be a reliable NATO ally, saying: “The fight against terrorism is part of the Triple Memorandum we made with Turkey and Finland. We will fulfill all our commitments, ”he said. (AA)
