Is the earthquake in Romania related to Turkey? The seismologist explained
Yesterday’s magnitude 5.7 earthquake in southwestern Romania sparked fear in Turkey, which has lamented earthquakes centered on Kahramanmaraş.
The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center announced that the epicenter of the earthquake in Romania was located 73 kilometers northeast of the city of Drobeta-Turnu Severin. No loss of life or property was reported in the magnitude 5.7 quake, whose depth was determined at 40 kilometers.
On the other hand, many people in panic left the buildings after the earthquake.
The question of whether the quake, which was also felt in some countries in the region including Bulgaria and Serbia, could be related to the faults in Turkey has generated controversy.
Bulgarian seismologist Valentin Buchakchiev stated that seismic activity has been intense in some parts of Romania recently. Speaking to the Bulgarian press, Buchakchiev pointed out that the failures in Romania are different from those in Turkey.
