Greek benefactors mobilized to support the victims of the earthquake in Turkey
After the two big earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş, the relief materials collected by the municipalities with the initiative of the Attiki Regional Governorate to support the earthquake victims in Turkey were gathered in the large warehouse of the Stadium of Peace and Friendship.
Speaking to AA correspondent, Attiki Region Civil Protection Coordinator Nikos Stathopulos stated that relief materials from affiliated municipalities were first sorted at the Peace and Friendship Stadium warehouse in Piraeus to be delivered in earthquake zones.
Noting that the coordination takes place under the umbrella of the Greek Foreign Ministry, Stathopulos said: “The Turks are our neighbors for us. We are also a seismic country. We have suffered earthquakes before. So we understand the scope of the problem.” he said.
Stathopulos stated that the Greek people took steps immediately after the earthquake to support the earthquake victims and showed great interest in their support campaigns.
Volunteers from Turkish citizens living in Greece also gave great support to the sorting and loading works.
Alper Tunga Yeşil stated that as Turkish volunteers living in Athens, they sorted the relief materials into many categories, such as clothes, blankets, baby food, medicines, and packed them by sticking Turkish notes on them.
Yeşil stated that as Turkish people in Greece, they are doing their best to “have salt in the soup”, saying: “We would like to go to the countryside and lend a hand, but unfortunately we can’t because we are too far away, but as Turks we live here in Athens, we can’t do that. We wanted to get this help. We are organized for two days. Our friends take time off from work or leave early. They come here. Together, we are preparing the products to pack and send to Turkey “. he said.
Some of the relief materials are expected to be transported from Patra to Adana by sea, and some of them will be transported to Turkey by road on trucks. (AA)
