An unidentified cylindrical object has been shot down by a US plane over northern Canada, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said. It happened last night during a joint operation by the Canadian and US air forces over the province of Yukon. Trudeau says he gave the order to shoot the object from the sky.
Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand declined to speculate on the origin of the object, which she said was cylindrical. It flew at an altitude of more than twelve kilometers and posed a threat to civil aviation, according to the minister. Anand points out that there is no reason to believe that the downed object caused damage to the ground.

US airspace monitor NORAD had previously announced that it was monitoring the object. It is not known what kind of object it is. Trudeau says he has been in contact with US President Joe Biden. The Canadian Forces will analyze the wreck.
The message comes a day after Biden shot down another high-flying object over the state of Alaska. The US military said Saturday it was not yet clear what kind of object it was. In a brief statement, the military said the unknown object has not yet been found in US waters and an investigation is ongoing. The recovery operation is complicated by the harsh winter weather in the search area.
The object over Alaska was much smaller than the Chinese balloon that was shot down on Feb. 4 and which the Americans say was used by the Chinese for spying. However, according to the United States, there was a risk to air traffic safety.
