Almost a year after the invasion of Ukraine, the Ukrainian population is still fighting, but fears are growing about the much-discussed Russian offensive. This is what VVD deputy Ruben Brekelmans says in BNR’s De Wereld, who visited Ukraine this week. Because what if the promised weapons don’t arrive?
It keeps many Ukrainians awake at night, Brekelmans says. Until the weapons promised by the West arrive, fears of the Russian offensive will grow. ‘They think that Russia wants to achieve a symbolic victory before February 24 (‘anniversary’ of the war, ed.),’ said the deputy. “That Putin has something in hand to celebrate on February 24th”.
An adviser to Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky shares these concerns, he said in a conversation with Brekelmans. “We have discussed many issues, but he is very concerned about the delivery of the promised weapons. If that happens in time,’ he says. “So, as far as I’m concerned, all the attention should be on this: ensuring that weapons are delivered as quickly as possible.”
Weapons and more
But besides weapons, Zelensky is now also asking for ammunition. The stock – which consists mainly of old Soviet equipment – is running out fast and that is why Ukrainians want to switch to Western arms. Especially since more production potential is available for Western ammunition.
However, this will be the new obstacle, Brekelmans thinks. “Being able to supply enough ammunition and spare parts can get difficult,” he says. “The European arms industry is expected to make a huge increase in production in the coming months, but we cannot do that because of the way the industry is organised.”
Not scared
But Ukrainians are far from afraid of losing the war in the end. “They say it very clearly,” concludes Brekelmans. “With the fighting spirit they have, the determination they have and the quality of their army, the Ukrainians are convinced that they are resisting the new Russian offensive.”
