United Nations in earthquake zone: death toll may double
As the world followed the earthquake that struck Turkey and what happened afterwards, United Nations Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths made contacts in Adana today.
Griffiths, who visited the earthquake site and met with relief teams, received information. Speaking to British Sky News after their meeting, the leading name in the United Nations made statements that caused concern.
After making contacts in Hatay, Griffiths spoke to British media in Adana.
“The death toll is likely to more than double,” Griffiths said. According to the latest official data, after the earthquakes that followed one after another on February 6, more than 20 thousand people lost their lives.
“I think it’s very hard to predict right now and the priority is getting people out of the rubble, but I’m sure the death toll will double or even more,” Griffiths said. This one is terrifying. “Nature has hit it very hard,” he said.
The senior UN official said: “The first 72 hours to rescue are often critical, but people are still being pulled from under the rubble. This is shocking. “The idea that there are still people and many of them alive under mountains of rubble is shocking,” he said.
