German security services have seen an increase in Iranian espionage in Germany since the eruption of mass protests in Iran, reports Welt am Sonntag. Iranians living in exile in Germany are said to be targets of espionage activities.
The security service has identified 160 people associated with both Germany and Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, the German government said after a request for information by the opposition Die Linke party. Opposition members are seen by those in power in Tehran as “a danger to the survival of the regime,” the response read. The “extensive espionage activities” would be primarily directed against pro-Israel and Jewish targets.
In September 2022, Mahsa Amini, 22, died after being arrested by the assistant squad for not covering her hair sufficiently. The Iranian Kurdish woman’s death has led to large-scale protests in Iran against the government.
