Erdogan: ‘The authorities should have acted faster’ Related Articles

Turkish President Reccep Tayip Erdogan says Turkish authorities should have acted quicker after Monday’s massive earthquakes. In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, criticism of the Turkish president’s actions was heard both at home and abroad.

Turkish opposition leader Kilicdaroglu even held Erdogan responsible for the high number of deaths. “In his 20 years of administration, he has not prepared the country for an earthquake like this,” said Kilicdaroglu.

Criticisms of the Turkish leader focus on the government’s “lax” attitude. For example, not enough aid workers were deployed and humanitarian aid started too late.

According to Turkey correspondent Joost Lagendijk, these problems were greater outside the big cities. “Particularly outside the big cities, large areas have been deprived of aid,” says Lagendijk.

Eefje Hendriks considers the Turkish president’s promise to rebuild everything in one year impossible. As a ‘gesture’, Erdogan announced that the government will pay the rent of the displaced people for a year.
