The first UN aid to Syria passed through the Turkish border

The first UN aid to Syria passed through the Turkish border

The first United Nations (UN) convoy carrying humanitarian aid to Syria, which suffered great devastation in the Kahramanmaraş earthquake, crossed from Turkey into Syria today.

Border gate sources stated that the UN convoy entered Syria through the Cilvegözü-Bab Al Hawa border gate.

The UN special envoy, Geir Pedersen, explained that the Syrians need “everything” in aid. Pedersen said in a statement in Geneva that they wanted guarantees that aid sent to Syria via Turkey would not be a political obstacle to reaching the areas most in need.

The UN described access to the rebel-held area in Syria through the Bab al-Hawa as a “branch to cling to for dear life” for the nearly 4 million people in need of humanitarian aid.

In Syria, the loss of life from the earthquake in the regions controlled by the opposition and the government is approaching 3,000.
