A visit by Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky to the European Parliament could be imminent. Today he visited British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and it is said that he will also speak in France today.
In addition to the conversation with the British Prime Minister, a visit to the British King Charles was also planned, according to Hammelburg. “So it’s a full agenda, as well organized as the British can be,” he says. “It also appears to have been taken on a Royal Airforce aircraft, for security reasons.”
Hammelburg does not dare to say what exactly was discussed, even if Zelensky’s wish list is now known: financial support, but above all even tougher and more enriching weapons. According to Hammelburg, there are rumors that more than 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers have already been trained in the UK, with another 20,000 on the way.
Flight training
Of the approximately 30,000 new troops, there are also troops who will receive additional flight training. “The official position of the United States – and, in fact, of most other NATO members – is that supplying fighter aircraft to Ukraine is unwise,” Hammelburg continues. “This creates too much risk to say, but this too seems to be a result of the way Zelensky operates. He keeps insisting and asking, and so he persuaded the British to make preparations by training the flight crews.’
The fact that Zelensky is now in the UK is by no means a guarantee that he will also appear before the European Parliament next week, the foreign commentator thinks. “In these circumstances it is not possible to say with certainty whether she will go to Brussels,” he says. “But all credible news sources, news agencies and political parties say it will happen.” According to Hammelburg, an extraordinary meeting of the European Parliament would also be held tomorrow morning at 10, without an item being included on the agenda. “A speech by Zelensky, which he is giving in Parliament, seems very probable to me”.
