The Dutch USAR search and rescue team has arrived in Turkey. After the strong earthquake, the country asked for help. From the Netherlands, 65 people and eight rescue dogs are on their way to carry out rescue work. “We are almost fully booked and then we will enter the affected area,” says USAR team spokesman Jop Heinen.
According to Heinen, the team is almost complete, after which everyone goes to the affected area. There is a lot going on at the airport: ‘We see a lot of rescue teams arriving, a lot of help is present and on the way. We have four rescue groups, people with experience as a nurse, firefighter or sniffer dog handler. These are people who in their daily work do nothing but provide assistance.’
Distribute help
Where Heinen is located it is still dry and there is no snow, in the affected area it is different with temperatures below zero. “This has consequences for those who need help.” Heinen doesn’t expect to go to Gaziantep himself. “We’re constantly looking at where help is needed. We need to distribute it as evenly as possible.” Heinen expects to be on his way in the morning.
