China’s foreign ministry on Sunday expressed its “grave disapproval” and called for the US Air Force to shoot down an alleged spy balloon. China reserves the right to respond appropriately, a statement said.
In the statement, the ministry called the US use of force “a blatant overreaction” in violation of international practices. For example, the United States did not let China know in advance that the balloon would be shot down once that decision was made.
Three buses
China’s three-dimensional bus balloon flew over the United States for days and was shot down over the Atlantic Ocean on Saturday. According to China, it was a drifting weather balloon. US President Joe Biden had already authorized Wednesday to blow up the balloon from the sky, as soon as it was possible to do so so as not to endanger American lives.
The downed balloon ended up east of the resort town of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The debris will be fished out and examined.
