The president’s aide asked Do Val to catch Brazilian chief justice Alexandre de Moraes making a controversial statement in a personal conversation and record it. By doing so, they would have discredited the Supreme Court and thus questioned the validity of the election.
While Do Val was asked to participate in the plan, Bolsonaro also ‘tacitly’ sat at the table. It is therefore the most concrete evidence so far that he planned to ignore the election results. Senator Do Val, long considered a Bolsonaro ally, declined to comment.
Power transfer
The transfer of power took place in Brasilia on January 1st. The former president was not present. Bolsonaro left 48 hours earlier for Florida in the United States, where he still resides.
His supporters made another attempt to undermine Lula’s authority. On January 8, thousands of protesters stormed government buildings in the capital.
An investigation into Bolsonaro’s role in that storm is underway. As part of that, the main court asked Senator Do Val to repeat his charges to the federal police.
