Rapist yoga guru sentenced to life in prison
According to the BBC report, a lawsuit filed by a woman in 2013 was decided on charges that Asaram had imprisoned her in a place of worship called an “Ashram” in the Gujarat state town of Motera between 2001 and 2006 and the had raped during that time.
Asaram, who is currently in prison serving a life sentence for another rape, was found guilty of repeatedly raping the woman and sentenced to life in prison.
Asaram was fined Rs 23,000 (approximately $281) and ordered to pay compensation of Rs 50,000 to the female victim.
Six suspects, including Asaram’s wife and daughter, were acquitted due to lack of evidence.
On the other hand, Asaram’s lawyers announced that they will appeal the decision.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Narayan Sai, the 81-year-old son of guru Asaram, was also sentenced to life in prison in 2019 for raping the victim’s daughter.
A lawsuit was previously filed against Asaram, on the charge of raping the daughter of his followers by taking her to his room in the “Ashram” on the charge of treating her.
Two of Asaram’s assistants, who were convicted of rape and sentenced to life in prison, were each sentenced to twenty years in prison. (AA)
