Declaration on the decision of the island of Cyprus of the UN

Statement from the Foreign Ministry on the decision of the United Nations Security Council on the island of Cyprus

The following statements were used in the written statement made by the Ministry:

* “The United Nations Security Council extended the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force (UNFI) stationed on the island of Cyprus for one year with decision number 2674 (2023) taken on January 30, 2023. We fully support the statement made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) regarding the said decision.

* Although not included in the UN Secretary General’s reports, the Council, detached from the realities on the ground, is seen to ignore the TRNC’s will for a two-state solution and insist on the tried and failed models of solution.

* This situation is incompatible with common sense and good will and demonstrates that the Council has failed to deviate from the direction of the Greek Cypriot side, instead of promoting a real solution on the island.

* The UN Security Council has once again ignored the inhumane and illegal embargoes imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people. Another contradiction in the resolution is the call for cooperation between the two parties, ignoring the realistic, constructive and sincere cooperation proposals that TRNC Chairman Ersin Tatar conveyed to the UN Secretary General in letters dated 1 and 8 July 2022. ”

“MARAŞ IS TRNC SOIL”

In the continuation of the statement, “We reject the Varosha-related issues in the decision, and reiterate our full support for the work done and to be done by the TRNC authorities in the region, respecting the rights of legal owners and taking into account the interests of the two peoples of the Island; We call on the Council to stop supporting the insincere position of the Greek Cypriot administration, which is trying to prevent Greek Cypriots from wanting to return to their properties. On this occasion, we would like to emphasize once again that Maraş is the territory of the TRNC.

“WE CALL ON THE SECURITY COUNCIL AND THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY TO BE AWARE OF THE TRNC”

The last part of the statement called for recognition of the TRNC and included the following statements:

* “Although the mandate of the UNG was extended, the consent of the TRNC was not obtained again. It was repeatedly recorded that this was contrary to established UN practices and that the UNBG could continue its activities in the goodwill of the TRNC authorities.

* It is essential that UNHCR continue its activities in TRNC territory on a legal basis. It should be known that we will fully support the steps taken by the TRNC authorities in this regard. The common ground that will pave the way for a just and lasting solution in Cyprus must be based on the realities on the ground.

* In this framework, we call on the Security Council and the international community to recognize the TRNC, which is the acquired right of the Turkish Cypriot people, their sovereign equality and their equal international status, based on the fact that there are two separate peoples. and two separate states on the island of Cyprus”.
