Israel is ramping up its troop presence in the West Bank in response to two shootings in East Jerusalem. A Palestinian man (21) killed seven people there on Friday. On Saturday, a 13-year-old boy, also a Palestinian, injured two people.
The shootings came after widespread unrest over an Israeli raid on the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank. Nine Palestinians were killed in that operation. Thursday’s raid was the deadliest in nearly 20 years, according to UN experts.
Epidemic
The outbreak of violence is a major challenge for newly returned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. After consulting with the security services, he urged people not to take justice into their own hands. Measures have been taken and the cabinet will meet on Saturday, the prime minister said. His new right-wing government took office last month.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell condemned the shootings and urged Israel to use deadly force only as a last resort. He added that Israeli security forces killed 30 Palestinians in the West Bank this year. In all of 2022 there were more than 150, the highest death toll since 2005.
