The EU establishes an “international investigative office” for Ukraine

Reynders, a member of the European Union (EU) Commission responsible for justice, held a press conference after the informal meeting that brought together interior ministers of EU countries in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, on President of the EU mandate.

Referring to the progress made in prosecuting war crimes in Ukraine, Reynders said: “The legal process has been going on since the beginning of the war. We work every day with all the necessary legal tools. We are working to establish the first layer to establish an international investigation office.” saying.

MANY INSTITUTIONS COLLABORATE

Reynders stressed that many actors cooperate with the General Prosecutor of Ukraine, the 14 member states that have brought their own cases, the joint investigation teams of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the EU criminal justice agency Eurojust.

Noting that Eurojust advises civil organizations on how to document war crimes and human rights violations, Reynders mentioned the importance of the institution’s new international database for storing and exchanging evidence that can be used in future cases.

Reynders claimed that 65,000 probable war crimes cases have been collected so far, noting that this is “the largest number of documented war crimes in history.”

Reynders, the EU Commission Commissioner for Justice, noted that the Commission wants to lead the mission in question and that discussions are continuing on possible mechanisms, such as the establishment of an independent international court. (AA)
