Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto noted that Finland should consider joining NATO without Sweden.
According to news from the Finnish news agency YLE, Haavisto said that the Tripartite Memorandum signed with Turkey during the process of joining NATO, after the burning of the Holy Quran near the Stockholm Embassy in Sweden and the provocations by the terrorist organization PKK /YPG. He then made a statement to the local press on how to proceed.
Asked if Finland should move at the same pace as Sweden in the NATO accession process, Haavisto said: “Helsinki should rethink this strategy if necessary. Of course, from the perspective of the security of both countries, this is definitely the number one option.” Minister Haavisto, on the other hand, stressed that they should be ready to reassess the situation.
Stating that Turkey is “shocked and angry” by what is happening in Sweden, making it difficult to negotiate with Turkey, Haavisto said: “These protesters are playing with the security of Finland and Sweden. Their goal is to provoke Turkey and influence public discourse.”
Haavisto said that Finland, Sweden and Turkey are discussing a possible tripartite meeting in the spring. (AA)
