Europe is creating its own chip industry Related articles

The European Parliament’s Committee on Energy and Industry (ITRE) today votes on the negotiating mandate for the proposed EU chip law. With the law, the EU wants to strengthen its position in the semiconductor industry and keep the protagonists of this market within Europe. The EU allocates 43 billion euros for this. “This is about to happen,” says VVD MEP and shadow journalist Bart Groothuis.

According to Groothuis, the negotiations will not only concern the budget, but also the law that should allow European chip production to take off and support the industry. Europe now makes 9 percent of the chips, if nothing happens, it will drop to 4 percent, according to Groothuis.

The MEP underlines Europe’s dependence on unstable parts of the world such as Taiwan, threatened by China. “More than ninety percent of advanced chips are from Taiwan. We must take the future into our own hands and become more relevant in the world.”
