EU statement on Iran’s Revolutionary Guard
Josep Borrell, the European Union’s (EU) High Representative for Foreign Relations and Security Policy, said that the inclusion of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Army on the EU’s terrorist list could only be possible after a court decision in one of the member states.
Borrell spoke at the entrance to the meeting of foreign ministers of the EU countries in Brussels.
Asked by a reporter whether Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps should be put on the terrorist list, Borrell said: “Look, there are a lot of interesting ideas about this. However, this is something that cannot be decided without a court order. You cannot say: ‘I don’t like you, that’s why I consider you a terrorist’. For this, there must first be a concrete sentence, a legal declaration in one of the member states. Then we will work on the issue at a European level,” Borrell said. He stated that ministers will only consider new sanctions against individuals today within the framework of human rights.
In the draft resolution adopted by the European Parliament (EP) on January 19, it was demanded to sanction the Iranian leaders and include the Revolutionary Guard Army in the EU’s list of terrorists. In response, the Iranian Parliament had prepared a bill calling on the government to include the armies of EU countries on the terrorist list.
UKRAINE IS AT THE TOP OF THE AGENDA
Underlining that the most important item on the ministers’ agenda will be the war in Ukraine, Borrell said he hoped that the foreign ministers of the member states would agree on additional financial aid to Ukraine, but none would be taken. official decision. today.
The High Representative stated that after the Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting held in Germany last week, many member states made military commitments and ministers will discuss today the level of military support to be provided.
Borrell announced that the Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitro Kuleba will also be present at the meeting. (AA)
