De Arruda had held the position since December 30, two days before the departure of far-right Bolsonaro. The military leader was confirmed in his place at the beginning of January by Lula, who accuses part of the army and police of collaborating with the assailants of parliament and other centers of power in the capital Brasilia.
Hundreds of Bolsonaro sympathizers have been arrested in recent weeks. Dozens of military guards were also fired because they failed to protect the attacked president’s palace.
