The Chinese government says 12,600 Chinese died from Covid-related complaints in the week before Chinese New Year, with 80% of the population believed to have been infected by the current outbreak. This writes Bloomberg.
It concerns the period between January 13 and 19 in which a total of 12,658 deaths attributable to covid were reported, the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention said in a statement. Since December 8, nearly 60,000 people have been killed.
Chief epidemiologist Wu Zunyou said that 80% of China’s population is currently infected with corona. But, although family members are gathering with each other to celebrate the Chinese New Year, Zunyou said another major outbreak was unlikely in the coming months.
WHO
In total, there are 471,739 people with covid in Chinese hospitals, of which 51,683 are in critical condition. The revelation of the figures comes just after the World Health Organization urged China to provide more information.
